This bright region is the core of the Rho Ophiuchi molecular cloud complex. In the optical image this area appears very dark. The two images together indicate that the area contains very cool gas and dust, making it one of the best sites in the galaxy for star formation. Here, in the densest region in the cloud complex, over 100 stars will eventually form.
